Why do so many politicians "self destruct"?

Just like celebrities they end up surrounding themselves with "yes" people. The politicians (or celebrities) begin to think they can do anything and it is ok....after all nobody can say "no" to them. I think a lot of these people believe what they are doing is perfectly ok...right up to the point they get arrested or the media gets hold of the story.
